Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
Habakkuk 3:17-18
This comes at the end of Habakkuk, after God foretold how He would use a wicked people, the Chaldeans, to bring judgment on His chosen people. Though His judgment would be painful, God promised to also bring deliverance in His perfect time. Habakkuk’s response is a difficult and beautiful prayer filled with praise and trust. Habakkuk ends his prayer to God with this passage where he reaffirms his trust in God – no matter what. When everything is stripped away, what remains? When the comforts of life are gone, even when the essentials of life are gone, even still God is the one who saves, and he satisfies. We put our hope in him and find our joy there.
